How to Make Your iPad/Android Tablet Childproof

on Mar 26, 2014

Child playing on a tabletChild proofing is no longer just something you do to your home. With the ever-increasing popularity of tablets and the growing market of child-friendly games for them, it is equally important to childproof your tablet. Here are step by step instructions on how to lock down your Android tablet or iPad as well as some recommendations for apps that will help you achieve greater levels of security.

While Android devices do not come with the same lockdown functionality as an iOS device, the Jelly Bean update added the ability to have multiple users on one device so that personal settings, web bookmarks, and widgets are not available to other users. This addition grants a large degree of individual privacy and can be a useful function for helping to keep a child out of your email and various web accounts but it does not encompass the full security measures required as a parent.

There are a few places within your tablet that you should enable parental controls and these are:

  • In-app purchases:

To prevent your child from making in-app purchases, set a password request for this function.

  1. Open the Google Play app.
  2. Access the menu by tapping the icon with three dots forming a vertical line.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll down and select User Controls.
  5. Click on the box next to Password and type in your Google password.
  • Age restrictions on apps:

You will also want to set an age restriction on certain apps to prevent your child from accessing them and make sure they are only able to open apps appropriate for their age. In order to do this, we will change the filter to Low Maturity. This will also prevent social connections through apps, protecting your child from unsupervised contact with strangers.

  1. Open the Google Play app.
  2. Access the menu by tapping the icon with three dots forming a vertical line.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll down and select User Controls.
  5. Select Content Filtering and change the setting to Low Maturity.
  6. Set or change your PIN or PIN settings by selecting Set or Change PIN.
  7. Enter your desired PIN then re-enter to confirm.
  • YouTube Settings:

YouTube allows access to SafeSearch filtering in the settings menu and there are a total of three levels of filtering which can be applied to the content to ensure your child does not see anything they shouldn’t.

  1. Open the YouTube app.
  2. Tap the menu button.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll down and select Search.
  5. Scroll down and select SafeSearch Filtering.
  6. Select the appropriate level of filtering.

On top of these settings, there are a variety of 3rd party applications which can help to lock down your phone even further. Kid Mode and Kids Place are popular apps designed to make it even safer for your kids to use your tablet unattended.

Parents will find that iPads include one useful feature that does not come standard with Android devices: the Restriction system which is designed to help make your iPad more kid-friendly. One thing to be aware of is that this system requires the entry of a 4-digit PIN which children will pick up easily. Try not to enter the PIN in front of them or they will quickly learn how to get around your safety settings.

Restrictions are divided into a number of sections but can be used to lock down virtually everything on your phone to create a web-safe system for your child to enjoy without worry. Use Restrictions to lock down the following functions:

  • Safari;
  • Other web access;
  • Facetime (video chat program);
  • iTunes purchases;
  • The ability to add or delete apps; and
  • In-app purchases.

Similar to Android devices, iPads have maturity settings that can be used to filter the content that can be browsed on iTunes. The exact settings vary from category to category so be sure to go through it carefully and make sure your desired maturity settings are in place.

Finally, use your Safe Settings options to lock down external interaction and block changes to your accounts, contacts, calendar, reminders, photos, and social media accounts. The volume level can also be locked as well as multi-player gaming.

For safe browsing, you may wish to look into an app called Ranger Pro Safe Browser which is free and easy to register. It allows you to further control and monitor online content.
